The NS5B polymerase is pivotal for HCV replication. Assisted by viral cofactors, this enzyme catalyzes synthesis of both negative and positive strands of HCV RNA. The enzyme has been validated in the clinic as a target for therapy and Tibotec scientists have discovered several novel classes of specific NS5B inhibitors. Phase I clinical trials have commenced to evaluate their potential for inclusion in future Hepatitis C drug combinations.
